It was a typically friday at a friends house for a play date. Toward the end of the afternoon my daughter's friend started not feeling well. I was called the next morning and told that she took a turn for the worse and they were on their way to Children's Hospital to be tested for H1N1.
I want to immediately say that this little girl is now as healthy as can be and everything is ok!! She did end up having H1N1 and it progressed to pneumonia.
There is so much scary information out there right now surrounding H1N1. The media is making it out to be this deadly flu, but in reality it is just the flu. It is a new strand and therefore not many people have built up immunities to it. However, that doesn't mean I wanted my 3 kids to get it.
The first thing I thought to do was how to build up our immune system. The kids got a dose of Vitamin D 1000IU's for my 6 and 4 year old I gave my 1 year old 400IU's. I take 5000IU's of Vitamin D daily as it is, so I was set! I gave the Vitamin D dose once a day for 3 days. I also gave all of us the homeopathic flu/cold remedy Oscillococcinum. The box says to take a whole tube worth 3 times a day. I did not do that. I gave everyone in the household 4 pellets once a day for three days as well. Doctor's say the incubation period for H1N1 is 3 to 4 days so that is why I choose that time frame.
$17 and 4 days later our family was healthy and we avoided the highly contagious H1N1 Swine flu virus!
I added the Vitamin D and Oscillococcinum to my Amazon Must Have's if you are interested in buying!

Great post Tara. What form of Vitamin D do you give your older kids? Do they make a chewable tablet? I have done a little research on the preventative effect of Vitamin D against flu (swine or otherwise) and intend to start taking it myself and giving it to my girls. But I need to find a kid-friendly form first.
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteIf you click on the Vitamin D link above in the post you will be brought to the brand I use. It is very kid friendly. It comes in 400Iu's. I gave 3 drops to my 6 and 4 year old and gave one to two drops to my 1.5 year old. I am sure it comes chewable, but the liquid drops are easy for *us*. I give them drops of other things in Mango juice so I can just add this to the mix. I did give it to them directly on their tongue when I first got it and they said it tasted yummy. How many IU's do you plan to give to your kids and yourself? What have you read?
